The stigma and misinformation that surrounds dementia remains a global problem. I am always keen to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s Disease and some readers may recall I set up the All Party Parliamentary Group on Dementia following my election to Parliament in 2005.
Over 22% of people in Kenilworth and Southam are post retirement age – and more likely to suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s. It is important people are made aware of the early symptoms, and that everyone can access the information they need to help them cope with this disease. Encouraging people to learn to spot the signs of dementia will play a significant part in helping those affected by the disease.
In 2012 the Prime Minister launched a national campaign focussed on improving healthcare for those with dementia and we are investing £300 million in dementia research over the next five years. To date, over 1 million people have been trained as Dementia Friends, my staff and me included and there are well over 400,000 NHS staff and 100,000 social care staff who are also Dementia Friends.
People suffering with dementia often say that following diagnosis they lose confidence to socialise. Family members can often feel left out and experience social isolation due to the impact a caring role has on their time and relationships.
There is a wide range of support and information available for those with dementia, their family and friends. I would encourage anyone to learn more about the disease and spread awareness in our community so not to forget about loved ones living with dementia, or those who may have passed away. The Alzheimer’s Society has produced a guide that is available at www.alzheimers.org.uk/dementiaguide or can be ordered by calling 0300 303 5933.
I am also pleased to say there are a number of Dementia cafés around Warwickshire, which offer a friendly and safe environment, where carers and people living with the disease can meet others in the same situation, share experiences and information, and learn about support available in their community.
The Little Ray of Sunshine Café in the Kenilworth Centre, Abbey End holds a regular drop in café. If you would like to join me in supporting their Afternoon Tea on Saturday 21st November between 2.30-5 p.m., I know the organisers would love to see you and would very much welcome your support.
