This week I signed the Holocaust Educational Trust Book of Commitment, reaffirming my commitment to marking Holocaust Memorial Day and remembering the six million Jewish men, women and children murdered during the Holocaust.
Holocaust Memorial Day, on 27 January, marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. It is an important moment to reflect on one of the darkest chapters in our history and to ensure its lessons are never forgotten.
As the voices of survivors grow fewer, the responsibility to remember and to pass that memory on rests increasingly with us. This year’s theme, Bridging Generations, underlines the importance of education in sustaining that legacy.
We also remember all those persecuted by the Nazis, including Roma and Sinti people, disabled people, gay men and political opponents.
At a time of rising antisemitism, remembrance must be accompanied by a clear commitment to challenge hatred wherever it appears.
🕯️ We remember, and we must not forget. 🕯️
