The violence in Syria has been shocking. I am appalled by reports that armed militias have carried out sectarian-motivated attacks on minority communities and religious sites, including Christians. That includes the attack on St Elias Church in Damascus which killed at least 25 people and injured 63. Such violence is utterly unconscionable.
I understand that converts to Christianity often face persecution. Violence, sexual assault and forced marriage have all been used against those who choose to convert. Such practices are abhorrent. Those responsible should be held accountable.
Syrian minorities have suffered 14 years of conflict and decades of oppression. The Syrian Transitional Government pledged to end this. They said they would respect religious minorities. They promised an inclusive Syrian state. They must abide by their commitments. A representative and inclusive Syrian Government is the only way to build a stable Syria and a better future for all groups.
The British Government should use its diplomatic influence to make clear to the Syrian Government the need to protect religious minorities. The British Government should judge the Syrian Government on its actions.
The UK supports programmes to document human rights abuses in Syria. Ministers should ensure that these programmes document crimes against Christians and these should be used to support efforts to hold perpetrators to account.
